To become a member of the Courier staff, you must enroll in Journalism 2, for which Journalism 1 is the pre-requisite. Each class is one semester long. Each member of the staff receives two grades per issue -- one for the article(s) s/he writes for that issue, and a participation grade for the regular performance in a given/chosen job. The following positions are available: Editor-in-Chief -- requires extensive computer experience, with thorough knowledge of Pagemaker. Demands many extracurricular hours, especially on the eve of publication dates. Writing responsibilities are waived for this position only. Managing Editor -- tracks progress of each step in publication process. Makes sure deadlines are being met, and that all members of staff are contributing fully. Acts as liaison to printer and administration. Advertising Manager -- coordinates sale of advertising, tracks budget, acts as liaison with Finance Manager and Editor-in-Chief. Section (Page) Editor -- Assigns articles to staff writers, stays in touch with events on campus and acts as liaison with relevant personnel, makes sure writers meet deadlines, edits articles for his/her page, designs and assists editor-in-chief with layout. (Two editors for each section of newspaper) Arts & Entertainment Editor -- Acquires and edits copy for center spread, creates crossword puzzle, works with Art Director to design center spread. Art Director -- Works with staff to meet art and photography needs, supervises photographers, acts as liaison with teachers to acquire art for publication, consults with editors on layout design, readies art for publication. Copy Editor -- Proofreads each article after it has been edited and revised, and checks all copy for errors before publication. Pollster -- Surveys ECR students and creates pie-charts &/or graphs for each issue. Also creates and conducts market surveys for use in ad sales. Adminstrative Asst. -- Organizes files, assists advisor & managing editor in coordinating flow of production, maintains staff portfolios. Historian -- Maintains back issues file, researches and informs editors of El Camino history.
